Helping The Homeless Survive The Winter

Homeless.Backpack

Street Church Free Backpacks, carry a number of useful items for those in need.

Do you think you would be able to contribute either financially, materially, or with your time in this valuable ministry? Here is a list of what we provide in these packs – please consider what you can do for the less fortunate in Edinburgh.

Bag Contents List:

– Hat, gloves and scarf – protection from the elements
– Socks – we have been told this is a must appreciated gift from homeless people, getting them out of a current wet pair or to double up for warmth
– Toothbrush & toothpaste – helping keep good hygiene
– Water bottle – a re-usable bottle for water
– 2 sheets of writing paper, stamped envelope and pen -many homeless people are estranged from their loved ones. This gives them the option to contact a loved one and let them now they are okay
Backpack– Snacks (cereal bars, chocolate bars, chewing gum, mints etc)
-£2 Greggs voucher  – can be exchanged for a roll and a hot drink
– Comb – basic thing we take for granted, but makes you feel better when you have been able to comb or brush your hair
– Earplugs – sleeping on the street can be noisy!
– Plasters – helps to keep any minor wounds clean
– Lipbalm – protection from the elements. Cracked dry lips are so painful!
– Wetwipes – for freshening up when unable to access public toilets
– List of homeless services available in Edinburgh – such as hostels and where you can be fed for free
– Literature – something to read to share our Christian faith and to remind the homeless person there is hope!

The cost of making the first bag is £13. Street Church Edinburgh do not take any administration charges from money that is donated.

Homeless follow up bag – given to people we have already met and previously given a first time bag to.

Survival Pack– Socks – to double up in cold weather or to change out of wet ones
– Snacks (such as cereal bars, chocolate, mints and chewing gum)
– £2 Greggs voucher – will buy a hot drink and roll for breakfast or lunch
– Small travel sized toothpaste – helping to promote dental hygiene
– Plasters – to help keep any minor injuries clean
– Tissues – being cold really brings on the sniffles!
– Literature – something to read to share our Christian faith – such as Steph Mcleod’s testimony (former drug addict who lived on the streets of Edinburgh)

These are all contained in a plastic re-usable drawstring bag. This can go on someone’s back to save their hands and we have seen people using them again, even for getting their next days food from the Bethany Care van!

The cost of each follow up pack is £5.50. Once again this is the cost and every penny is going to the homeless, Street Church Edinburg do not take any admin fees
